孫志飛（1905-1966），上海人，出身書香世家，父孫玉聲乃民國名小說家「海上漱石生」，以〈海上繁華夢〉風行文壇，蓄畫亦豐。孫志飛畢生從事公用事業，四十年代任華商電氣公司董事總經理，堅拒與日偽同謀，於社會得享碩望。
孫氏承家學，通經史，以家藏書畫於日寇侵華時遭回祿，遂銳意重集，一九四四年至五五年間，殫竭精力，耗平生所蓄，以「真、精、潔」為旨，搜明清各派書畫百餘幀，其處事耿誠，每探賾索微，請益方家，亟為藝壇仝道看重，與吳湖帆、錢鏡塘、劉海粟等皆引為摯交。

六十年代，「文革」風熾，孫氏藏明清書畫遭盡抄去，至一九七九年始獲歸還。他嘗訓兒輩曰︰「此國之瑰寶，宜嘉惠世人」，孫夫人楊瓞緜與兒輩遂將該批藏品慨捐上海博物館，並由該館舉行隆重接受捐贈儀式。一九九九年，該館辦〈孫志飛先生藏書畫回顧展〉並出版〈孫氏家族捐贈‧上海博物館明清書畫集萃〉專集以誌。
Property from the Sun Zhifei Family Collection (Lots 3068-3077)
Sun Zhifei (1905-1966) was born into a literary family in Shanghai. His father Sun Yusheng was a famous novelist who wrote the popular Dreams of Splendour in Shanghai and amassed a superb collection of Chinese paintings. Sun Zhifei spent his life working in public utilities. In the 1940s, as the director and general manager of the Shanghai Chinese Electric Power Co., he refused to collaborate with the Japanese during wartime and was much lauded for his nobility and conviction.

Sun came from a long line of scholars and was well versed in the Chinese classics. After the family’s collection of artworks had been destroyed during the Japanese invasion, he vowed to rebuild it. From 1944 to 1955, he spared no effort in restoring the collection. Seeking out the “authentic, excellent, and pristine,” he accumulated more than a hundred works of Ming and Qing-era painting and calligraphy in a wide range of styles. He was honest and sincere in his dealings, appreciated the subtle details of every work, and often asked the advice of noted experts. He was held in high esteem by the art community, becoming close friends with artists and connoisseurs including Wu Hufan, Qian Jingtang, and Liu Haisu.

The Sun family’s collection of Ming and Qing painting and calligraphy was confiscated at the height of the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s and eventually returned in 1979. Sharing Sun’s vision that “These national treasures should be enjoyed by all”, Sun’s wife Yeung Tit Min and their children generously donated this collection to the Shanghai Museum, and a grand ceremony was held to mark the occasion. In 1999, the Shanghai Museum organized “The Exhibition of Treasures of the Ming and Qing Dynasties’ Paintings and Calligraphy from the Collection of Mr. Zhifei Sun” and published an accompanying monograph.

This sale features an assemblage of painting and calligraphy works by late Qing to modern era masters from the Sun Family Collection. Leading piece is a gold-bluegreen landscape masterpiece by Zhang Daqian, which, once an important exhibit in the artist’s solo exhibition in 1948 and a much treasured piece in the family collection, was offered to the market for the first time. The section also showcases an impressive array of folding fans dedicated directly by sought-after artists to Sun Zhifei and his eldest son Sun Yu Fat. This collection does not only bear witness to the personal relationships between the Shanghai art scene and the Sun family, but also serve as a testament of the refinement and taste that has been passed down through three generations of the family.
