The silver gilt standing cup seen here is typical of Hamburg goldsmith production during this period; the same figure of Bacchus can be seen in a stand for sweetmeats made in Hamburg in circa 1631-33, which is today in The Kremlin Armoury, Moscow (fig. 1).
Much of Hinz's life remains unknown. He was active in Altona, a suburb of Hamburg, and Arnold Houbraken mentions Ernst Stuven as one of his pupils.
