K eith Haring and Kermit Oswald met as very young children in their hometown of Kutztown, Pennsylvania. Kermit recalls his friendship with Keith, “Keith and I have known each other since Sunday School before we were even enrolled in Kindergarten. His father Allen was a Church School teacher. We were best friends our entire lives. I attended the first real exhibition he had in Pittsburgh at the Arts & Crafts Center and every NY show once he was in Manhattan. I framed and installed all his NY exhibitions in addition to building his studios, storage racks and various home furnishings etc. We gave each other works since we were children. I typically had the first choice of all exhibitions for hanging and framing his shows. He gifted me works for every birthday. He had works of mine in his homes throughout his life as we did of his. I’ve drawn with ink for as long as Keith did. It likely started in about 4th or 5th grade. I still prefer ink as a drawing medium and have always had a fascination with Asian Art and calligraphy.”
