Condition
The statue with expected age-related damage to the outer layers, as illustrated, including lifting, flaking, cracking, and losses to the gesso stratum and the gilt- and colored-lacquer strata. The bronze core exposed in several areas, with some of the exposed surfaces oxidized to green and with occasional corrosion-induced breaks or holes (longest break is to the back of the shoulders, approx. 40 cm; largest hole is to the back of the sculpture at the top of lotus base, approx. 3.5 x 1.5 cm). Some scattered dents, especially to the base. The underside of the sculpture is unsealed. The interior is oxidized to green and red. A clear consolidant has been applied to some areas of the exterior to stabilize the lacquer and gilding.

明嘉靖朝佛像，存世甚為罕見，帶款者更屬稀珍。本像尺寸碩大，藝匠刻劃彌勒佛愉悅神態更見傳神，銘文記嘉靖四年，由此可知應為嘉靖禁佛前所製。
據銘文所示，此像由內官監信官梁濟造。內官監為明代朝廷內府二十四衙門之一，由宦官掌管。內官監，人數最多，辦公處佔地最廣，掌各宮廷建構及日常用品。內官監以掌印太監為首，下設各級。內官監屬下宦官，工作分三更次，輪流通宵留守宮廷。每更有一領班及一工匠，各有專長。內官監並掌米鹽庫、冰窨、皇壇庫、營造庫等，另可取用銅錫搭材等，於國內設多個作坊，由宦官掌管，每地限駐四年（見蔡石山，《明代宦官》，奧爾巴尼，紐約，1996年，頁43-44）。
布袋，又名笑佛，福態常笑，豁達大度，提示世人佛祖無處不在，保衛佛法，於漢文化中尤為流行。其像常帶歡笑， 提一布袋，衣袍寬鬆，坦胸露腹。可比較一例，尺寸較小，斷代十六世紀，售於香港佳士得2010年5月31日，編號1964。另可比較一銅漆佛像，斷代嘉靖十二或二十二年，售倫敦南肯辛頓佳士得2002年11月14日，編號17。
嘉靖皇帝篤信道教，抑制佛教，故嘉靖年間製作佛像甚少。據載，早於嘉靖六年五月，嘉靖帝下令關閉北京西山戒壇及天寧寺戒壇，禁止自洪武二十四年起，每三年一度之受戒儀式。不少奉行儒道之官員，藉此迫害全國各地、各社會階層佛教徒與佛門之地。故此，此時期道教人物造像製作較多，例見一銅漆關羽像，帶嘉靖四十三年款，出自 Avery Brundage 收藏，現存舊金山亞洲藝術博物館，載於 Rene-Yvon Lefebvre d’Argence，《Chinese, Korea and Japanese Sculpture in the Avery Brundage Collection》，舊金山，1974年，圖版169，作者述，「 此像圓渾堅固，尤以腹部為然，乃明代中期典型」（頁316）。另比一例，明嘉靖元年銅碧霞元君坐像，售倫敦蘇富比2012年5月16日，編號227。
