S otheby’s first auction of the year in Singapore achieved a robust total of S$16,669,385 on 25 January, with an impressive sell-through rate of 93.5%, underscoring the depth of regional collecting and strong demand for both Western and Asian works.

The top lot of the evening was Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès’ Weavers, painted in the later years of his celebrated Balinese period, which achieved S$1,524,000. Notably, three works from David Hockney’s seminal series The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 (twenty eleven) all exceeded pre-sale high estimates, demonstrating the sustained market enthusiasm for the English artist’s groundbreaking iPad drawings.

Other standout lots that attracted spirited competition include:

- Marc Chagall’s Couple et mimosas – sold for S$736,600, well above pre-sale estimates
- Chen Wen Hsi’s Eight Gibbons – sold for S$533,400, more than triple its low estimate
- Lalan’s Untitled – sold for S$520,700, more than double its high estimate
- Yue Minjun’s Between Men and Animal – sold for S$508,000, far exceeding pre-sale estimates
- Le Pho, Composition – sold for S$304,800, double its high estimate
- Oswaldo Vigas’ Untitled – sold for S$215,900, nearly quintuple its low estimate
