  • signed with the butterfly with shaded wings and inscribed imp in pencil (on the tab at lower left)
  • etching with drypoint, printing with plate tone, an atmospheric, selectively wiped impression of Kennedy and Glasgow's first state (of three), on laid paper with a WW watermark
  • sheet: 29.9 by 20.2cm.; 11 3/4 by 8in.
  • Executed between 1879 and 1880, Glasgow cites 36 impressions of this subject.

Condition

Trimmed by the artist with thread margins on three sides and a narrow margin at upper sheet edge, leaving a signature tab below, in good condition apart from the signature tab skilfully re-attached, three small made up areas at upper left sheet edge and lower tips of sheet, two very fine skilfully repaired paper splits at centre of lower half of sheet and upper right sheet corner, two skilfully repaired tears supported with tissue towards centre of lower sheet edge (the longest measuring approx. 1cm), a few pale fox marks, some small areas of discoloration in lower half of sheet verso, framed.
