Condition
Good condition overall. Chips, scratches, marks and abrasions throughout consistent with the object’s age and use within the culture. Heavy insect damage to the foot of the figure, consistent with its traditional use. Further insect holes throughout the figure. One crack to the head of the figure which wraps around the upper hook and one further long crack to the proper right of the face approximately 18cm long. Multiple further minor cracks throughout the figure. Much of the original red pigment remains and some of the white and black pigment remains. Small label bearing Elizabeth Pryce collection inv. no. EP-77 to the back of the figure.

Conçues pour intensifier le contact du chasseur avec les esprits responsables du succès de la chasse, les sculptures du Haut Korewori servaient également d’intermédiaires entre les hommes et leur environnement. Possessions personnelles, elles recevaient de leur propriétaire un nom secret ; à leur mort, elles étaient déposées dans des lieux servant de grottes funéraires. Individuelles et intimes, ces images faisaient l’objet d'une très grande attention : « leurs auteurs, les Ewa, avaient pris le soin de les tailler dans des essences particulièrement denses et résistantes, c’est un indice précieux de leurs intentions. Ces œuvres étant vouées à durer plus que la vie moyenne des hommes, ils pouvaient en attendre aussi quelque surpassement de leurs facultés ordinaires » (Bounoure, « L’art du Haut Korewori au Musée des Cultures de Bâle » in Arts d’Afrique Noire, n° 127, Automne 2003, p. 24). A la beauté universelle de la sculpture répond l’audace d’un naturalisme réinventé : les formes se dissolvent puis se redessinent pour saisir, dans le mouvement naturel du bois, la présence de l'ancêtre. L’opposition entre la vue frontale au décor finement gravé et la vue latérale dans laquelle se dessine majestueusement le visage de l’ancêtre primordial, illustre le contraste entre monde visible et monde invisible. S’inspirant à la fois des canons transmis par la tradition et des images qui lui apparaissaient en rêve, le sculpteur a conçu un chef-d’œuvre alliant l’architecture anthropomorphe à des concepts intimement liés au vocabulaire formel de l’art du XXe siècle.
