Condition
Overall the condition of the marble is good with minor wear to the surface consistent with age. There is dirt to the surface throughout. There are some specks of red paint in areas, in particular to the proper right shoulder at the back and the pony tail. There are some minor chips and scratches, particularly to the edges, including some slightly larger chips to the bust's bottom edge where it meets the socle. There is a reattachment to the socle's upper ring, and some plaster restoration is visible. There are also some chips to the socle's upper edge where it meets the bust.

Catalogue Note
In the present portrait, Nelson is depicted in rear-admiral's full dress uniform and wearing various decorations, including the two large naval medals he was awarded for the battles of Cape St Vincent and the Nile: a third was award posthumously for Trafalgar, the other decorations are the order of the Crescent, given to Nelson by Sultan Selim III, the Neapolitan order of St Ferdinand (to the left of the Crescent), and below these the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, awarded in 1797
