Description

  • Scipione Pulzone
  • The Madonna Annunciate
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Mrs M.H. Walton, Bath, by 1965 (as Sassoferrato);
Private collection.

Condition

The painting is in good condition. The canvas is lined and stable. The paint surface is clean, with only very light craqueleure throughout. The varnish is slightly milky, with a few drips along the neckline. Inspection under UV reveals a couple small areas of retouching, including one on the forehead. The paint colors are bright, though there is some discoloration in the blues. The painting could be hung immediately but may benefit from a light clean to improve the drips in the varnish and brighten the painting. Offered in a simply carved gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

This Madonna Annunciate is characteristic of Pulzone's style from the early 1590s and is a reworking of the same figure in the artist's Annunciation from 1587 which hangs in the Museo di Capodimonte, Naples.

The attribution has been endorsed by Dottor Antonio Vannugli, who will include the work in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné dedicated to Pulzone. The painting will also be included in Dottor Vannugli's forthcoming article in the publication Paragone.
