Nearly identical pairs of obelisks were sold Sotheby's New York 30 September 2005 lot 141, and 30 September 2004 lot 155; also Christie's New York 19 May 2004 lot 241 and 22 May 2002 lot 363.
The Italian designer Renzo Mongiardino (1916-1998) created some of the most important interiors of the postwar period, including those of Gianni Agnelli, Aristotle Onassis, Lee Radziwill and Gianni Versace, and was also a set designer for film and opera.
