Catalogue Note
The box covered in red cloth and with orange-painted alphabet and animals around the sides, and the presentation inscription on the top, and with tack decoration and a brass handle. The interior with printed paper lining and a note inscribed Diana Pierce Clark born Sept. 2, 1845 Daughter of Capt. Jeremiah Clark + Diana Pierce of Andover + New Bedford Mass.
The box is accompanied by two books owned by young Diana: The Cornucopia by “Cousin Cicely” (Sarah Hopkins Bradford, Auburn, NY: Alden and Beardsley, 1852 (inscribed Diana Pierce Clark 1857) and Stories about Birds and Beasts by “Theodore Thinker” (Francis C. Woolworth), New York: Clark, Austin & Smith, 1859 (inscribed Diana in pencil).
