Private collection, Switzerland (purchased at the above sale)
Exhibited
Paris, Salon, 1861, no. 809 (p. 98 of the exhibition catalogue)
Condition
The canvas has not been lined and has been extended by the artist himself with a finer canvas at circa 15cm from the lower framing edge.
Ultra-violet light reveals areas of old residual varnish which make the surface quite difficult to read. However, some scattered cosmetic retouching is visible, including:
- a circa 5 by 3cm area in the lower left corner;
- a circa 7 by 4cm area in the woman's left arm;
- clusters of retouching in her chin;
- intermittent strokes along the right, left and upper framing edges; and
- scattered lines of in-painting notably in the sky.
Overall, this work presents well and is ready to hang.
Presented in a decorative gilt frame.
Colours are richer and have more contrast than what suggested in the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note
Jacques-Louis-Jules David was the grandson of the immensely influential neo-classical Jacques-Louis David. Additionally, Jules David was an art historian in his own right, and among his grandfather's first biographers. He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1849 where he studied with Cogniet and Picot.
