Description
- silk, pile
- approximately 192 by 143cm; 6ft. 4in., 4ft. 8in.
Knot density: V: 12/cm; H: 12/cm
Condition
139cm across the top, 143cm across the bottom, 192cm from the left, 190cm from the right.
Very flexible handle. Dense even 2mm pile overall with spot areas down to knotheads, for example to azure blue in the main field (see top of arch). Some minor oxidisation to the dark brown, commensurate with dye, visible within spandrels. Some minute repairs and some small splits for example top left and top right of outer border. Some vertical tension warps visible across width of top section. Some losses at both ends with linen strips attached across the width to the reverse at both ends (now lacking all fringing). With later blue overcasting to original red silk double sidecords. There is a repaired vertical split to the lower point of the central taupe coloured palmette, approx. 6cm long, visible from the photograph as a white line.
A lovely classical silk with beautiful drawing and complimentary colours, technically finely and skillfully woven with very attractive abrash to blue ground well balanced by the classical border and very well balanced composition and colours overall.
