Catalogue Note

The celebrated bijoutier Jules Wièse opened his shop at 90 rue de Richelieu between showing so successfully at the London 1862 Exhibition and at the Paris Exposition of 1867. The trade label on the present case would appear to date from this first period. He was forced to abandon the premises during the Commune, returning to cheaper accommodation four doors down the street where he stayed for at least ten years before opening again at number 90. He transferred the business to his son Louis and daughter Marie in 1880 and they remained at 90 rue de Richelieu until they closed down in 1925.
