Condition

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The canvas appears to be unlined. There is a craquelure pattern throughout the paint surface which is stable. The varnish layer is uneven. There are extensive and large areas of retouching visible in natural light mainly in the sky. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows an opaque varnish layer and extensive retouchings in the sky and strengthening in the figures and boats in the foreground. There are other retouchings. Overall the painting is in fair condition. The work is framed.
