Catalogue Note
Sadequain’s time in Europe allowed him to interact with a variety of artists painting in new and exciting ways, such as Pablo Picasso and Matisse. Sadequain was able to take the figures that Picasso depicted and meld that with the Islamic calligraphy that was an essential part of his upbringing. One can see evidence of intertwined, elongated forms in this exquisite Acrobats work. The abstract nature of this painting is further underscored by the Islamic tradition of non-representational forms. Sadequain is able to perfectly evoke figures without ever explicitly constructing them. The cross-hatching technique with which he has applied the paint hearkens to calligraphic penmanship while adding an overlying sense of balance to the painting.
