the globular body rising from a recessed base, the buff-coloured clay flecked with reddish-brown slip, the base carved with a two-character mark reading Mingyuan, Japanese wood box

Condition

The mouthrim of the teapot has a C-shaped restored area of approx. 1.5 x 2.5 cm. There are also a few flakes to the rims, especially to that of the cover. There are also some minor stains.

Catalogue Note

Chen Mingyuan, a native of Yixing, Jiangsu province, is recorded as having been active during the early Qing period. As one of the leading and most versatile potters, Chen's works were highly sought after among the literati. His vessels are best known for their thin bodies and fine craftsmanship, while his inscriptions are said to be in the style of the Sui and Tang calligraphers.
