Catalogue Note
Maurice Sendak's hand-painted cow was sold at a 2003 fund-raiser to support the Chicago Opera Theater staging of their inaugural production of Brundibar. It was designed and decorated by the artist with Wild Thing characters interspersed with foliage. Sendak's associate Lynn Caponera filled in the background, base, and banded legs and tail under his supervision, after which he provided finishing details and placed max, dressed in his wolf suit, inside a metal pail under the udder.
