The movement is running at the time of cataloguing, however it may require service soon. As depicted accurately in the catalogue photograph, the dial shows some spotting throughout. The case retains its original stepped form very nicely and appears to never have been polished. That said, it does bear visible scuffs throughout from wear. Due to the glare, these are not as accurately visible in the catalogue photograph. Overall an extremely rare and desirable example The interior of the bezel is marked 159, reflecting the last three digits of the case serial number.

Catalogue Note

With an Extract from the Archives confirming sale on 8 September 1961.

In the 1960s, Patek Philippe worked with the Geneva jeweler Gilbert Albert to design a series of wrist and pocket watches with innovative asymmetrical cases. One of the inspirations for Albert's unusually-shaped pieces was his admiration for modern sculpture, particularly works by Brancusi and Mondrian. The pieces resulting from this collaboration are legendary among collectors for their unusual and daring shapes.

According to our research, there have previously only been three examples of Ref. 3424 in platinum with a case identical to the present lot offered at auction before, making the present lot the fourth such piece. Other variations on this reference include the Ref. 3424-1 and Ref. 3424-2. The present lot is being offered on behalf of a descendant of the original owner and has never before been seen at auction.

An example of Ref. 3424 in platinum is illustrated in the Patek Philippe Museum book, Vol. II, p. 240.
