Description

  • South German School, Early 16th Century
  • The Death of the Virgin
  • oil on panel, unframed

Condition

The panel is cradled and affixed to a thin sheet of board. Scattered retouchings are visible in the face of the figures, although the Virgin's face remains free of retouchings. There is also some scattered retouching in the arm of the saint at lower right and in the Virgin's headdress. A horizontal band of retouching approximately 3 cm high and 20 cm wide can be seen running from the head of the saint at lower left to the arm of the saint at lower right. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an even varnish and confirms the aforementioned retouchings, which have been carried out in two campaigns. The work is offered unframed.
