Condition

Oil on canvas. Lined. The edges of the original canvas are visible in the current framing. The work is covered by a thick, shiny varnish and a stable web of craquelure that has a minor amount of texture. Additional creases extending around the edges of the frame, which may be resultant from a previous framing. Under UV light, the varnish fluoresces green and obscures the majority of the canvas. There are a few dashes of inpaint to address craquelure visible along the edges and some potential older inpaint along the bottom edge.

The present composition, dated to the late 17th or early 18th Century, is derived from Velazquez's The Buffoon Don Diego de Acedo, 'El Primo', a full-length portrait in the collection of the Prado, Madrid (inv. num. P01201).
