Description

  • Venus and Minerva in a landscape
  • oil on paper, laid onto pine panel, unframed

Condition

The panel has two slim wooden supports inserted horizontally into the reverse. The paint surface has recently been cleaned and restored. Underdrawing is visible. There is a small tear upper left corner. There are small areas of overpainting: in the still life lower right, in the foliage around Diana, and two the left of Athena. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows older restoration consisting of retouching to the sky upper eight and to the village in the distance, and to the two gourds. More recent restoration consists of scattered retouching in the fleshtones of Diana, in the foliage throughout, and to a lesser extent in the right part of the shield and in Athena's blue skirt. There is an old uneven varnish.
