Description

  • Master of Delft
  • The Virgin and Child enthroned
  • oil on panel

Provenance

The composition may be based upon the Triptych with Virgin and Child with Saints by the Master of Delft, now in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (inv. no. A 3141).1 The style of the architectural background is very close to a series of panels showing female saints by the Master of Alkmaar.2
1. Oil on panel, 87.1 x 69.2 cm.
2. A set of four, all oil on panel, each: 36.2 x 24 cm. See M. J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting: Lucas van Leyden and Other Dutch Masters of his Time, vol. X, Brussels 1973, p. 74, cat. no. 50, reproduced plates 30 and 31.

Condition

The picture is made up of three vertical panels, which have been cradled. Restoration to the panel joins is visible from the recto. With the naked eye one can see frame abrasion all along the left hand margin, and discoloured retouchings in the flesh tones and in the skirts of all three figures. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows a recent campaign of scattered retouchings throughout, as well as the aforementioned restoration to flesh tones and drapery. There is an vertical area upper left corner of denser restoration, approximately 20 cm. long.
