Antwerp School, early 16th century

The panels have a fresh reverse and have probably been sanded down as there is no evidence of marouflaging. They are uncradled and appear very stable and flat. The paint surface is not too dirty, the colours are well-preserved. There are patches of retouching to lost paint, visible on close inspection. In the former, the first is located lower left corner, measuring 12 x 4 cm.; the second by Christ's hand, measuring 9 x 5 cm. In the latter, upper margin in the sky, measuring 2 x 8 cm. In the former, inspection under ultraviolet light shows the retouching aforementioned lower left, as well a vertical line centre right, measuring approximately 35 cm. There are also bands of retouching in the top half, mainly following along the arched top. In the latter, ultraviolet light shows bands of retouching in the upper half following the curve of the arch, a vertical retouching running down from the top of the cross to the bottom edge, measuring 57 cm. A shorter vertical band of retouching measuring 19 cm. running from Christ's chest to the lower margin. The pair are sold in their integral frames, aged, but without major damages.
