Catalogue Note

Rare. Brahms's string quartet in A minor (1873), and its companion in C minor, were the most important quartets composed since the late quartets of Beethoven. The photograph apparently dates from the early 1880s, and shows Brahms's fully-grown beard, which he grew in 1878 at the age of forty-five (according to Swafford, to compensate for his "abnormally high voice").
