Catalogue Note

The invitation records the mourning of the world of music for the passing of the "celebrated and irreplaceable composer, who died from the effects of dropsy at 6 o'clock in the evening of 26 March 1827". Numerous visitors came to his apartment to pay their last respects to him. Gerhard von Breuning recalled that, when he visited, various "strangers had already cut all the strands of his hair". For another lock of Beethoven's white hair, see the example R1 at the Beethoven-Haus, Bonn.
