Condition

Oil on canvas, lined. While somewhat flattened and thin, the surface is in overall good condition. Frame abrasion along extreme edges, especially the upper edge. An area of lifting and associated loss in the landscape at center left. A stable web of craquelure is visible throughout the sitters face, arms and torso. Some older, discolored restoration is visible in the tip of the sitters nose, cheek, and below her lip. Under UV light, the majority of the work is obscured by a green fluorescing varnish that does not allow us to read the picture.

Catalogue Note

This portrait is a second version of Lawrence’s Portrait of Lady Jane Long, datable to circa 1793, in the Huntington Library and Art Gallery, San Marino, CA.

Lady Jane Long (née Maitland) was one of nine children of James Maitland, 7th Earl of Lauderdale (1718-1789) and his wife, Mary Turner Lombe (1734-1789).  In 1787, she married the wealthy merchant Samuel Long with whom she had three children.  Following Long’s death in 1807, she married William Houston (1766-1842), a British army colonel with whom she had two sons.  In 1831, Col. Houston was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Gibraltar.  Lady Jane accompanied him to his new post and died shortly after their arrival in 1 June 1833.
