Catalogue Note
“Since then I started to get interested in Capogrossi, whose language was to me so distinctive, and whose brilliant and nervy content had infinite possibilities: an outsider. I curated an exhibition of him at the Cavallino Gallery, in Venice, and after that I suggested to him to be part of the «Naviglio» artists’ group. At the Biennale in 1952, Capogrossi was included with five works and one of them was bought by the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Rome; soon after he was the only Italian to be invited at the exhibition «Véhémences confrontées», created in Paris by Michel Tapié at the Nina Dausset Gallery. Listed with him, international and avant-garde names, such as Hartung, Pollock, Mathieu, De Kooning, Wols. In the meantime the Zimmergalerie of Frankfurt, in Germany, was holding a really successful solo exhibition of him. In January 1953 I introduced him at the Naviglio Gallery and this time the important collectors did not let such a singular artist escaspe: from Jucker to Casare Tosi, from Mazzotta to Jesi, from Moglia to D’Alessandri, everyone started to purchase his works for their collections. On the other side, critics began to analyse is works with acuity. At the catalogue launch, Michel Seuphor, one of the most influential French critics, said: «After Mondrian, I’ve never seen such an intimate and powerful union between a personal style and a theme»” (Carlo Cardazzo in Capogrossi, Galleria Selecta, Rome 1956)
