Description

  • An Egyptian Bronze Figure of an Ibis

  • Length 6 in. 15.2 cm.
sacred bird of the moon god Thoth, seated in an alert attitude with the neck arched back, the tear-shaped convex eyes finely modeled, the tail feathers and leg markings carefully engraved.

Joseph Brummer (1883-1947), New York, inv. no. P5265, acquired from a dealer named Lambessis on August 3rd, 1928
Reverend Theodore Pitcairn (1893-1973), acquired from the above on January 17th, 1929
recorded as no. 314 in a typewritten inventory entitled “Rev. Theodore Pitcairn. Sculpture and Miscellaneous Art Objects at Château les Pleignes, France. September 1, 1938”
by descent to the present owner

Condition

Very good and as shown, very minor nicks and other imperfections on the surface, lower legs and feet with some old corrosion, especially on ankle area of proper left foot, spot of bronze disease visible in photo on proper right leg, engraved details very fine and crisp, very firmly affixed to the Belgian black marble base.
