Condition

This photograph conveys an extraordinary amount of detail, from the intricate folds of each leaf to the jagged edges where the vegetable was cleaved. This early print is on semi-glossy paper and is in essentially excellent condition. In raking light, a fine patina of age-appropriate silvering is visible in the dark areas of the image. Upon very close examination, a few deposits of original retouching and tiny impressions that do not break the emulsion are visible overall. There is minute wear along the lower right edge. The print is mounted to buff-colored card, which is appropriately age-darkened and lightly soiled. The periphery of the mount is worn, with attendant small losses of the upper paper-ply, and the corners are creased and rounded. On the reverse of the mount are fingerprints from handling and 2 hinge remnants. This print is number '4' in a projected edition of 50. Weston's negative log in the Center for Creative Photography, Tuscon, records prints numbered 1 through 8. In addition to the print of this image in the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, Conger locates prints in the following institutional collections: University of Art Museum, Arizona State University, Tempe; Art Institute of Chicago; The Saint Louis Art Museum; and Special Collections, University of California, Santa Cruz, this last a Project Print.
