Catalogue Note

This is one of the earliest known works by Voille, a pupil of François Hubert Drouais (1727-1775), known as Drouais fils.  Indeed, this elegant likeness of Monsieur de la Guerche dates from the very year in which Voille is last recorded as studying with Drouais and clearly reveals his influence in the rendering of the flesh tones, and details such as the silk of the dressing gown and the lace sleeves and jabot.  The greenish blue of the costume resembles the color of the dress in Drouais's Portrait of Madame Favart of 1757 in the Metropolitan Musuem of Art, New York.
