Description
- Bolognese School, second half of the 16th Century
- Half-length portrait of a woman
- oil on panel
- 20 1/2 x 17 1/2 inches
Condition
The panel is cradled on the reverse and has a vertical bow. It appears to be made up of three vertical boards with two further modern additions to the left and right edges, approximately 3/8 in. in width. An old repaired split, presumably at the panel join and visible in the catalogue image, runs the length of the panel, 4 in. parallel to the right edge, with retouching and some minor losses along it. The paint surface has suffered somewhat, there are areas of thinning and abrasion throughout. There are some areas of lifting, particularly concentrated in the left hand section, causing a minor loss in the background (again visible in the image). Inspection under UV reveals retouching throughout the figure and scattered in the background.
Offered in a late 16th century cassetta frame, black with gold floral painted decoration (cut down).
