Condition
The panel is flat and stable and made up of two horizontal boards. It appears to have been shaved down slightly on the reverse, exposing old worm channels. The are dovetail batons attending to two old horizontal splits running from the lower left hand corner and from just above center on the right hand edge. Both splits and an upside down V shaped channel, likely from an old hanging element, are filled. While the panel is much older, the paint surface likely dates between 1890 - 1910. The paint surface is covered by a thick, yellowed, uneven varnish and minor losses, many of which are filled, are visible throughout. Old restorations to the filled crack running from the right edge are visible and pass through the head of the enthroned figure. Another filled restored crack runs through the legs of the horses and dogs lower center. There is a larger filled loss of approx. 1 in. in the architecture at right.
Inspection under UV is impeded by the yellow varnish though aforementioned retouches are visible, along with appararent strengthening to the outlines of the central figures and horsemen.
The painting would benefit from a clean and revarnish and the present retouching could be revisited and more sensitively applied.
