Catalogue Note
The wispy moustache, large beret and flowing necktie were all much favoured by mid 19th-century artists and writers in both Germany and France, but on balance this powerful portrait - very probably a self-portrait - seems perhaps slightly more French than German in character. Yet despite its extremely strong and personal style, no convincing attribution has yet been proposed.
