Description

  • Saint John the Baptist
  • oil on panel

Condition

The panel is uncradled and with a very slight convex bow. There is a fine vertical split in the wood measuring 19.5 cm. beginning at the centre of the lower edge. It is barely visible from the verso. The paint surface is dirty. Brush strokes and the fine range of tones in the face are well-preserved. Colours are strong throughout and there is no missing paint. There is a small scattered discoloured retouchings in the background and flesh tones visible to the naked eye. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms these scattered retouchings, and also shows two surface scratches (a few cm. long) in the upper left of the Saint's cloak. There has been a small degree of strengthening around the edge of the upper part of the cross, and the upper and lower cloak. Otherwise there is no sign of any major restoration. This lot is offered in a plain wood frame painted dark brown, with numerous surface scratches.
