Catalogue Note
Datable to circa 1640, this impressive painting, which incorporates both a religious vision and a handsome full-length portrait, was possibly conceived for the private chapel of the donor. A preparatory study on paper for the head of Saint Eustace is in the Musei Civici in Padua where it is listed as by an anonymous Venetic artist.
Saint Eustace was an early martyr who lived at the time of the Emperor Hadrian. Before his conversion he was a Roman soldier and general who went by the name of Placidus. The story relates that one day, while out hunting near Tivoli, he had a vision of a deer which carried a crucifix between its horns. In words which find close parallels in the story of the conversion of Saul, the Lord spoke through the deer and asked Placidus why he was persecuting him. The solider immediately converted and had his family baptized. To this day he is considered the patron saint of hunters.
