Catalogue Note

This is one of a group of early, large-scale wash drawings by van Goyen in which the figures are given much greater prominence than in his later works. Indeed, in the earliest of these wash drawings, dating from 1624-5, the overall impression is as much that of a genre composition as of a landscape, but by the time this drawing was executed, the interest in landscape so typical of van Goyen's later works has clearly begun to assert itself. In the forms of elements such as the cattle and the trees, there is clear evidence of the influence of those pioneers of Dutch landscape draughtsmanship, Willem Buytewech and Esaias van de Velde, but in other respects the style is very much van Goyen's own. A fine winter landscape, dating from the same year as the present drawing and very similarly executed, was sold, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 8 November 2000, lot 28.
