Catalogue Note

This brooch has been designed by Cartier in 1989 for the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution. The Gallic rooster is a non-official symbol for France, based on the play of the latin words gallus (rooster) and Gallus (Gallic). It figured with a globe on Louis-Philippe's seal, King of the French (1830-1848), and on top of the July Monarchy flags. It also featured on French stamps and coins.
