Catalogue Note

This is an unsual landscape by Richmond, which demonstrates his admiration for J.W.M. Turner. Early in his career Richmond had been encouraged by John Ruskin to study the work of Turner and make copies of his work. This had a lasting effect upon Richmond's landscape painting and is here evident in the dramatic light effects of the setting sun whilst there also appears to be an influence from the work of Samuel Palmer in the lyrical depiction of the landscape.
