Catalogue Note

THE ORIGINAL WOMBLES. The illustrators Margaret Gordon and Oliver Chadwick first drew the furry inhabitants of Wimbledon Common as creatures which resembled teddy bears. This can be seen in these thirty-three (of forty-four) illustrations from the second Womble book, The Wandering Wombles as published by Ernest Benn in 1970. It was following the success of Ivor Wood's TV series - and, from 1973, the phenomenal success of Mike Batt's pop group - that the characters were redrawn.

Drawings presented here include frontispiece and title-page illustrations. They appear on pp. 4, 15, 18, 24, 27, 32, 37, 43, 45, 49, 55, 64, 67, 69, 75, 81, 88, 91, 97, 104, 109, 113, 121, 124, 129, 139, 145, 152, 160, 164, 168, 175 and 179.
