Catalogue Note

"A distinct stylistic breakthrough took place in Mitchell's paintings of 1955. Areas of more full-blooded color interweave with dense webs of horizontal lines and float across the centers of white fields. Remnants of the Cubist infrastructure appear in the opposition of horizontal skeins of pigment, often quite thick, and vertical strokes and drips that freely divide the surrounding white fields into rectilinear compartments." - Judith E. Bernstock in Joan Mitchell, New York, 1988, p. 31
