Catalogue Note

Rockwell Kent travelled to Monhegan Island, off the coast of Maine, in 1905 at the recommendation of his mentor, Robert Henri.  Impressed by the landscape and people of Monhegan, Kent returned a year later and built a home and studio.
Corliss Lamont, son of one-time partner and chairman at J.P. Morgan & Co., Thomas Lamont, was a noted socialist philosopher and civil liberties advocate.  Lamont, the author of numerous books and pamphlets and a professor at Harvard, Cornell and Columbia Universities, was recognized for his efforts against McCarthyism and for international understanding. Lamont was a friend, ally and supporter of Rockwell Kent’s from the mid-1940s until the artist’s death in 1971.
