Catalogue Note
The present work was given by Sorolla to his wife Clotilde's brother Juan Antonio. The family relation is suggested by the familiar use of names in the inscription: "Tono" for Juan Antonio and "Chimo," a common Valencian nickname for Joaquín which the artist used on several occasions. The portrait was given by Juan Antonio to his son Mario who travelled from his native Spain to the United States circa 1915 for post-doctoral work at Yale. Mario married Marjorie Douglas Banus in 1917 and remained in the United States.
In the present work, the roughened sun-tanned skin of the sitter, painted with the artist's characteristically bold use of paint and brushwork, suggests a man who works outside. While several generations of the family have known the painting as "The Fisherman," the identity of the sitter has yet to be determined. An indistinct inscription following A mi querido may provide further clues but its deciphering remains elusive.
