Catalogue Note
Grand pianos hold a special fascination for Jony and Marc, because it is easy to see hwo the music is created by hammers hitting strings of various lengths. In pursuit of the best possible example, they visited the Steinway & Sons New York factory, which in its 160-year history has produced concert-worthy instruments for illustrious performers ranging from Vladimir Horowitz and Sergei Rachmaninoff to Billy Joel and Rufus Wainwright. For the (RED) Auction, Jony and Marc proposed painting this maple, spruce and cast-iron beauty white and red. The only one of its kind, this "Red Pops" Grand also boasts a whimsical sketch by Richard Allan on its soundboard, a depiction of Jony and Marc working under the lid of the piano as if they were mechanics under the hood of a car.
