Description
ink and colour on silk, depicting two large blossoms of indigo-blue peonies with an attendant pale red bud, all growing on long branches with smaller buds and furled leaves in two tones of green, with five seals Cixi Huangtaihou zhi bao ('Seal of the Empress Dowager Cixi') in the top centre, Dayazhai ('Hall of Great Elegance') to the right, Futian wuliang ('Everlasting good fortune') in the centre right, and Lezai renhe (Happiness lies in the harmony of the people) above Yang taihe ('Nourish harmony') to the left, on brocade mounts
Condition
There is foxing and old mold stains on the surface, predominantly on the lower half of the paintings, but with also some patches towards the centre. The silk is lightly soiled and faded overall with further light fraying along the edges. The painting is no longer mounted to scroll ends nor framed.
