Description

  • Adriaen Carpentiers
  • Portrait of Edward Weld (1705-1761) of Lulworth Castle, in a garden, a statue of Minerva beyond
  • inscribed lower left.: Edward Weld Esqr. / Ob: 8 Decem: 1761 / at: 56
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

By inheritance from the sitter until sold anonymously ("The Property of a Family"), London, Christie's, 10 April 1992, lot 18 (as Attributed to Adriaen Carpentiers).

Condition

The picture appears to be in very good condition, with no apparent damage or loss of paint, and the catalogue illustration is representative, though slightly dark. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some minor retouching just below the hanging glove, and a small amount of very minor infilling to craquelure in the hand and forehead. There is an opaque varnish overall, which is obscuring some of the details, particularly in the background.
