Condition

The canvas has been lined, although it is unclear whether this is a relining or merely a strip-lining as the reverse is covered by a layer of paint. Ultraviolet light reveals just a couple of very minor signs of retouching addressing frame-rubbing. This painting is in good condition. Held in a simple gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

Painted in 1908. Loiseau was passionate about the seasons and eager to capture them in his paintings, whether the spring blossom or the autumn harvests, and often depicted the same orchard or garden at different times of year. This was an interest he shared with Claude Monet, whose paintings Loiseau admired. Chaponval is a village on the banks of the Oise just outside of Paris.
