Catalogue Note

The arms are almost certainly those of the Trieste family of Padua.  In the 17th century they established a factory for making silk goods, which later employed several hundred people.  They are recorded as a philanthropic family who encouraged Hebrew studies; noted book collector David Kaufmann recalled visiting "the palace of the Trieste brothers in Padua" in 1877, and he acquired ten crates of books and manuscripts from them.  See also the Italian Torah Crown, lot 113, which has an inscription for Gabriel Trieste (1784-1860), president of the Jewish Community of Padua.
