Catalogue Note
This drawing is a variant of the composition of one of Visscher's most celebrated etchings, The Pancake-Maker.1 Another drawn version of the subject, showing the same woman with a slightly older-looking, less benign face, but happily without the knife in her hand and with an innocuous spinning wheel beside her, is in the Dutuit Collection at the Petit Palais, Paris.2
This image, more perhaps than any other in Visscher's oeuvre, shows what a great master of Dutch realism he was.
