Catalogue Note

Unlike many of his Brussels landscapist contemporaries, Gaspard de Witte experienced Italy at first hand, in the late 1640s, which is probably why he included classical motifs such as the present obelisk in many of his paintings, which otherwise remain un-italianate, probably due to the prevailing taste in Flanders at the time.
